  1. Summary:
Tom was Japanese. In order to become a Shakespearean actor, he went to the narrator’s house every week and asked him to hear him recite Hamlet. However, as a 31 years old man, Tom was expected by his parents and relatives to earn money instead of being a schoolboy at this age. They tried several times to persuade him, but he still stuck to his dream. Finally, they gave him up. As time went by, the narrator gradually felt worried about Tom’s future as well. He persuaded him to abandon his unreachable dream and ask him to give up. After that, Tom didn’t go to his house anymore. Years later, the narrator saw Tom sitting in the Piedmont car and burying his head in a book. When he looked up at him, he smiled and waved his hand. Then the car went up to Broadway.

    Analysis:
The main character, Tom, plays an important role in the story. We all know that it is very hard for ordinary people to stick to what they want when other people don’t support them. However, Tom was a distinctive person who would try his best to realize his dream even if it was very difficult. At the end of the story, though the author didn’t reveal that Tom succeeded, we can see it from the last sentence that he was much closer to his dream.

Contrary to Tom, the narrator was like the ordinary people who fear what they do are wrong as other people question them. We can see it from the story. At the beginning, the narrator didn’t think what Tom did was wasting his time; instead, he was willing to help him out. However, when Tom’s uncle came over to persuade him, he started to doubt if it really did him good. After his uncle abandoned him, he felt uneasy and worried about Tom’s future. He even asked him to give up his dream. That’s the way the ordinary people think when other people around them are not in support of what they are doing.

As for Tom’s parents and relatives, they were the Asian traditional elders who want their children to get good grades at school, get a good job to make a lot of money, and marry a good mate to deliver the next generation. They don’t think it is necessary for their children to spend a lot of time on their dreams, especially they are of an age when they should get a job. They think having a well-paid job is more important for them than reaching an unreal dream.
